damage. a new gallup tracking poll has the president opening up a 6-point lead over romney. as mitt romney fumbled his way down the campaign trail. so first this lack luster rnc convention set him back. and then he completely bungled his response to the libya situation and that didn't help. but then came the biggest mistake of all. 47% rant caught on tape. now, national polls are not always the best way to understand the state of the election. and for that, you've got to go to the swing states. and sorry, mitt, but the pictures there are not much better. a "new york times" cbs quinnipiac poll shows that big margins exist among likely swing state voters. in pennsylvania, the president is up big. 54% to romney's 42%. he leads romney 53% to 44% in florida and in ohio, he leads by a full 10 points! 53% to 43%. the last one is really important because if history is any guide the road to the white house really does run through ohio. no republican has ever won the white house without winning the state of ohio

that is outside the margin of error. for governor romney, time that cruel, cruel mistress is slipping away. early voting begins in ohio next tuesday. can he win without the state? if history is any judge no republican in history has won without ohio. according to the latest nbc news battleground map the president is expected to get 243 electoral votes to romney's 191. with eight tossup states. obama win in ohio with its 18 electoral votes would put him at 261 electoral votes, that is just nine away from winning re-election. surprising exactly no one ohio has been a top focus for candidates. while governor romney logged 17 trips to the state this election cycle president obama is making his 13th visit this year alone. earlier this month the democratic ticket made clear just how much ohio means to them. >> if we win ohio, we win the election. >> if we win toledo, we will win ohio. and if we win ohio we'll win this election. >> john heilemann, there has been no shortage of love for the state of ohio this election cycle. president obama and mitt romney both speaking at 1:05 today. i wonder your take

's at 51%. mitt romney is at 43%. both campaigns think this one is getting more difficult by the moment for mitt romney to win. however -- and this is where it gets fascinating -- in virginia, the president's lead has shrunk to just two points, within the margin of error. last month president obama led by five points there. in florida, mitt romney has closed the gap as well. he's now statistically tied in the state of florida. it is a one-point lead. 47%-46%. al hunt, it is fascinating. ohio seems to be on its own as far as the swing states go. but we could show other swing state polls in colorado, in nevada, in north carolina. these states are really getting tight, to such a degree that a great performance by romney tonight could change the dynamic. >> conceivably, but i don't think it's quite that close yet. i think you certainly see it, as you point out, in florida and virginia. you don't see it in ohio. wisconsin it looks like it's actually widening. iowa, it's four to six. and the problem by taking michigan and pennsylvania off the table, which really the romney people have done de
